Tornado Tracks in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Deadly tornadoes raked across Alabama on April 27, 2011, killing as many as 210 people as of April 29. The hardest-hit community was Tuscaloosa. The top image, acquired on April 28 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite, shows three tornado tracks through and around the city. The lower image, from April 12, shows the area before the storm.
The tracks are pale brown trails where green trees and plants have been uprooted, leaving disturbed ground. Though faint, the center track runs from southwest of Tuscaloosa, through the gray city, and extends northeast towards Birmingham. Two other tracks run parallel to the center track. The northernmost track lies in an area where the National Weather Service reported a tornado, but no tornado was reported in the vicinity of the more visible southern track. In the southern region, strong winds were reported.
The tornadoes were part of a larger weather pattern that produced more than 150 tornadoes across six states, according to the National Weather Service. The death toll reached 300 on April 29, making the outbreak the deadliest in the United States since 1974.

Severe Tornado Outbreak in the Southern United States

Severe Tornado Outbreak in the Southern United States

April 27 and April 28, 2011, brought the deadliest tornado outbreak in the United States since 1974. By dawn on April 28, at least 250 people had been killed in 6 states. Alabama was the hardest hit, with 162 confirmed dead as of Thursday morning.
This image shows the storms at 1:45 p.m. U.S. Central Daylight Time on April 27, and the animation shows the development of the weather system that spurred the widespread tornadoes. The images are from the GOES satellite.
The animation starts on April 26 and runs through the morning of April 28. The ingredients for severe weather are evident in the cloud patterns. A relatively stable mass of cold air—visible as a swirl of more-or-less continuous clouds—rotates in the north along the top of the image. Meanwhile, moist air pushes north and west from the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The warm air contains small low clouds.
The collision between two such air masses is enough to generate severe weather, but the weather also was amplified by the jet stream on April 27. Though not directly visible in the image, the narrow band of fast-moving wind blew north and east between the two air masses. With surface winds blowing from the south and east, and the jet stream blowing from the west, powerful smaller-scale circulation patterns generated lines of intense thunderstorms.
The thunderstorms shown in this image began to rise over Louisiana midway through the day on April 27—around 16:00 UTC or 11:00 a.m. local time—and moved across Mississippi and Alabama through the afternoon. Forming along and ahead of the turbulent boundary between the air masses, the storms move east and north with the jet stream. The bright white spots within the clouds are very active storms, quite probably the systems that generated tornadoes.
Throughout the day, many such storms arose over the South. The slow eastward progression of the upper-level system permitted successive storms to affect the same region for a much longer time span than usual. According to the National Weather Service, more than 150 tornadoes were reported throughout the day.
The images in this animation are from the GOES satellite, a geostationary satellite whose orbit keeps it above the same spot on Earth at all times. Such an orbit allows the satellite to image the movement of clouds every few minutes, observations that are necessary for weather monitoring and forecasting. GOES is a joint NASA and NOAA satellite.

Music: Johnny Cash - Cry. Cry. Cry - Lyrics - 19 Links to his music - 19 enlaces a su musica

"Cry, Cry, Cry"

Everybody knows where you go when the sun goes down.
I think you only live to see the lights of town.
I wasted my time when I would try, try, try.
When the lights have lost their glow, you're gonna cry, cry, cry.

Soon your sugar-daddies will all be gone.
You'll wake up some cold day and find you're alone.
You'll call to me but I'm gonna tell you: "Bye, bye, bye,"
When I turn around and walk away, you'll cry, cry, cry,

You're gonna cry, cry, cry and you'll cry alone,
When everyone's forgotten and you're left on your own.
You're gonna cry, cry, cry.

I lie awake at night to wait 'til you come in
You stay a little while and then you're gone again
Every question that I ask, I get a lie, lie, lie
For every lie you tell, you're gonna cry, cry, cry

When your fickle little love gets old, no one will care for you.
You'll come back to me for a little love that's true.
I'll tell you no and you gonna ask me why, why, why?
When I remind you of all of this, you'll cry, cry, cry.

You're gonna cry, cry, cry and you'll want me there,
It'll hurt when you think of the fool you've been.
You're gonna cry, cry, cry.

Jizzax Province, Uzbekistan

Jizzax Province, Uzbekistan

Jizzax Province, Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is a dry, landlocked country, covered mostly by the sands of the Kyzyl Kum (Qizilqum) Desert. A little over 10 percent of the land is intensely cultivated, however, especially in river valleys. One such area occurs in Jizzax (Jizzakh) Province, where farmed land extends from the edge of a large lake, Aydarkol’, eastward past the Syr Darya River.
Landsat 7 captured these natural-color satellite images of farmed lands in Jizzax Province in 2002. The top image shows the area on September 20, and the bottom shows the same area on November 23. Just two months bring significant changes. At the end of summer, varying shades of green predominate. As autumn progresses, however, the fields turn brown. The only areas of lingering green occur in the shallow waters of Aydarkol’ and isolated patches along the river.
Cotton dominates Jizzax Province’s agricultural crops, and Uzbekistan is a major exporter of cotton. Other farming includes grain, vegetables and grapes. Locals also engage in livestock farming, beekeeping, and cocoon production. The majority of Uzbekistan’s population lives in densely populated rural communities where farming and ranching are possible.
Through this flat, cultivated region, the Syr Darya River takes a meandering path, looping east and west. Evidence of former river wanderings appear in the oxbow lakes lining the river. When a meandering river takes a shortcut, the longer path it used to follow becomes isolated. The result is a semicircular water body that testifies to the river’s past.

Sunset over Western South America

Sunset over Western South America

Astronauts onboard the International Space Station see, on average, 16 sunrises and sunsets during a 24-hour orbital period. Each changeover between day and night is marked by the terminator, a line on Earth's surface separating the sunlit side from the darkness.
While the terminator is often conceptualized as a hard boundary—and is frequently presented as such in graphics and visualizations—in reality the edge of light and dark is diffuse due to the scattering of light by the Earth’s atmosphere. This zone of diffuse lighting is experienced as dusk or twilight on the ground; while the Sun is no longer visible, some illumination is still present due to light scattering over the local horizon.
The terminator is visible in this panoramic view across central South America, looking towards the northeast. An astronaut shot the photo at approximately 7:37 p.m. local time. Layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, colored bright white to deep blue, are visible on the horizon (or limb). The highest cloud tops have a reddish glow due to direct light from the setting Sun, while lower clouds are in twilight.
The Salar de Coipasa, a large salt lake in Bolivia, is dimly visible on the night side of the terminator. The salar provides a geographic reference point for determining the location and viewing orientation of the image.
Astronaut photograph ISS027-E-12224 was acquired on April 12, 2011, with a Nikon D3S digital camera using a 50 mm lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 27 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, NASA-JSC.

Bottoms Up for Antarctic Ice

Bottoms Up for Antarctic Ice

Upending the idea that all ice sheets grow from the accumulation of snow at the top, researchers working in Antarctica have found evidence of large-scale ice-making at the bottom of that continent's massive ice sheets. The surprise finding could change scientists’ understanding of how glaciers rise, fall, and move horizontally across the landscape.
An international research team flew multiple Twin Otter airplane passes over East Antarctica’s Gamburtsev Mountains from November 2008 through January 2009. Equipped with ice-penetrating radar, magnetometers, laser ranging systems, and gravity meters, scientists mapped the topography of the ice surface and of the buried mountain range at the bottom of the ice sheet. The project was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and other international institutions as part of the International Polar Year.
The image above shows a radar profile of the ice as recorded on January 1, 2009, on the south side of Dome A in the Gamburtsevs. The base of the image reveals the rugged land beneath the ice, while the upper edge shows the flat, annual layering typical of ice formation from the top. In between, there is a jumbled mess unlike anything researchers had seen before.
When the science team first examined their radar profiles in real time, they thought there was a mistake, a glitch in the instrument or data. Perhaps the science team was just too tired from the long, cold flights. But further analysis confirmed what they were seeing.
“We usually think of ice sheets like cakes—one layer at a time, added from the top,” said Robin Bell, a geophysicist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “This is like someone injected a layer of frosting at the bottom—a really thick layer.”
Beneath Dome A, a plateau that forms the high point of the East Antarctic ice sheet, at least 24 percent of the ice formed from the bottom up. In other places, as much as half of the ice sheet is made up of this bottom-forming ice.
Researchers believe friction between the ice and land surface, as well as natural heat radiating from the solid earth, can melt significant amounts of water on the underside of an ice sheet. Several years ago, scientists found large lakes underneath the Antarctic ice that were likely formed by such processes. The liquid water is insulated from the extreme cold of the surface air by the ice sheet; the extreme pressure from the overlying ice can also make it harder for water to freeze.
The movement of the ice sheet and the natural flow of water over the landscape can then move some of that water to areas where there is less ice above—meaning less pressure and less insulation. Sometimes the water is squeezed up valley walls. Either way, the result is a quick re-freezing that makes the unusual ice formations shown above. The creation of this bottom ice can deform the shape of the entire ice sheet above.
“Water has always been known to be important to ice sheet dynamics, but mostly as a lubricant,” Bell added. “As ice sheets change, we want to predict how they will change. Our results show that models must include water beneath.”
