ABOUT

Eric Kellerman is a Briton who has lived near Nijmegen in the Netherlands for just over half his life. In 2008, he retired from academic life to spend even more time on photography.

He works almost entirely in the studio and uses digital equipment from camera to print, although image manipulation is limited to darkroom-like processes. Specialising in the nude, he has a regular team of female collaborators, most of whom have a serious interest in movement (dance, drama therapy, athletics, martial arts). Sometimes, when there is no model available, he photographs vegetables and fruit out of desperation. He is doing more fashiony things these days too.

Kellerman used to consider his work to be distant, abstract, melancholic, ‘unerotic’, despite its subject matter. Now he's not so sure. He emphasises line, geometrical form, texture, implicit movement, and above all, chiaroscuro. He likes to create ambiguity in his photos, so that the viewer is sometimes unsure what part of the body is being looked at. In this way, he attempts to free the female body of its conventional associations.

He has been influenced by surrealism (Dali, Magritte, Delvaux’ nudes and railway stations) and the Canadian ‘magic realist’ painter Alex Colville, whose occluded bodies in essentially intimate scenes can create a surprising sense of alienation. This partial view, the ‘privileged peep’, fits in with Kellerman’s particular aesthetic very well.

After a brief spurt of activity on April 9th and 10th, 2011, Mounta Etna is relatively quiet again. Except for a thin ribbon of fresh lava, pristine snow covers the summit of the volcano in this natural-color satellite image. In addition to lava and ash (now hidden beneath snow), the eruption generated small pyroclastic flows. These flows were generated by the violent interaction between hot lava and deep snow.
The image was acquired on April 21, 2011 by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite.

Ma ciò che lo ferì
profondamente nell'orgoglio
fu l'immagine di lei
che si sporgeva da ogni foglio

col bombarolo.

Spring Flooding in Manitoba

Flood warnings, road closures, and evacuations struck in Manitoba in late April 2011. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on April 25, roughly 1,600 residents had been evacuated, 30 municipalities had declared local states of emergency, and hundreds of municipal roads had been closed. The Montreal Gazette reported that the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation south of Winnipeg was under evacuation orders, driven by the rising Red River.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired these images on April 24, 2011 (top), and April 4, 2011 (bottom). The images use a combination of infrared and visible light to increase the contrast between water and land. Snow is bright turquoise. Ice-covered water bodies are electric blue. Water is dark blue. Vegetation is green. Soil is earth-toned. Clouds are pale blue-green.
Snow blankets most of the region in early April, but it has largely retreated 20 days later. One lingering area of snow occurs north of the Assiniboine River in southwestern Manitoba. Ice likewise lingers on Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. Most of the snow cover, however, has melted, and rivers have risen. The Red River, which has already spilled over its banks along the North Dakota-Minnesota border, remains high. The Assiniboine and Souris Rivers—invisible in early April—are conspicuous on April 24. CBC reported that the Assiniboine River was the primary focus of Manitoba’s flood-mitigation efforts. Meanwhile, the Qu’Appelle River in Saskatchewan remained high.

Russia’sBezymianny Volcano erupted vigorously on the morning of April 14, 2011. At the time of the eruption, the Joint Air Force & Army Weather Information Network reported ash at an altitude of 25,000 feet (7,600 meters) above the volcano. This natural-color satellite image (top) shows evidence of the size of the eruption. Dark volcanic deposits (likely a combination of pyroclastic flows and lahars) extend more than 7.3 kilometers (4.5 miles) into valleys to the southeast. A light-colored plume of ash, steam, and sulfur dioxide rises above Bezimianny’s summit and blows towards the west. Volcanic ash covers the upper slopes of the volcano, especially to the south and west. White snow, still deep in late April, blankets the surrounding landscape.
A false-color image (lower) reveals more features on the active volcano. At the summit, a red “hot spot” may indicate where fresh lava is being extruded from the lava dome. To the southeast, an active lava flow appears as a similar hot spot. In these wavelengths, bare rock and ash are gray, and snow and ice appear cyan. These images were acquired near noon on April 22, 2011, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite.
