Large Fires in Northern Mexico
Dense smoke billows from two large fires burning in northern Mexico in this image, taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on April 9, 2011. MODIS has detected fires in this area since March 23. Active fire locations are outlined in red.
The fires are burning in the remote mountains of Mexico’s Coahuila state. According to the Mexican National Forestry Commission, the fires had burned at least 42,000 hectares of brush and pastureland in steep terrain as of April 7. The Mexican government has declared the fires a national disaster and requested international assistance in fighting the fires, said the National Forestry Commission.
The intense fire activity seen on April 9 was likely fueled by the same strong winds that contributed to extreme fire conditions throughout Texas on April 9 and 10.

Wildfires in Central Texas
The Killough and the Swenson fires were just two of several large fires that burned in Texas on April 10, 2011. Record-dry vegetation, low humidity, and strong winds led to extremely hazardous fire conditions on April 9 and 10, said the Texas Forest Service. By the end of the day on April 10, state fire crews were working on containing nine large fires.
This image, taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on April 10, shows the two large fires burning in central Texas near Lubbock. Places where MODIS detected active fire are outlined in red. The newly burned ground in the wake of the fast-moving fires is charred brown.
By the morning of April 10, the Killough fire was nearly contained after having burned 10,500 acres and one home. The Swenson fire had burned 71,000 acres and was still uncontained.

Wildfires in Southwest Texas
The Rock House Fire was burning out of control when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image on April 10, 2011. Red boxes mark the location of active fires, and brown, charred land shows the fire’s path. A thin plume of smoke streams northeast from the fire front. The burn scar shows that the fire burned around the town of Fort Davis. MODIS also detected a fire immediately northeast of the town of Alpine, in Brewster County, Texas.
Burning through grassland in southwest Texas, the Rock House Fire was first reported on April 9, and by April 10, it had burned at least 60,000 acres and 30-40 homes in Fort Davis, said the Texas Forest Service. Like several other large wildfires burning in Texas on April 9-10, the Rock House and Brewster Fires were fed by strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation.
