Fish: Aipichthys velifer - Order Beryciformes, Family Dinopterigidae
Shrimp: Carpopenaeus septemspinatus
Starfish; Geocoma libanotica
Geological Time: Middle Cretaceous, Cenomanian Stage (95 million years old)
Size (25.4 mm = 1 inch) Aipichthys; 48 mm high, Shrimp: 45 mm long; Starfish: 30 mm and 10 mm across
Fossil Site: Lebanese Lagerstatt, Haqel, Lebanon
Exotic fossil fish is Aipichthys velifer a member of the Order Beryciformes, Family Dinopterigidae. Aipichthys is believed to have been a predator of smaller fish. The genus died out during the Upper Cretaceous, leaving no descendants. There is also a fossil shrimp known as Carpopenaeus septemspinatus, a name derived from its seven rostral spines. Finally, there are a pair of negatives of the starfish Geocoma libanotica. Thus the plate shows a small diversity of the shallow-water Cretaceous ecosystem of what was to become Lebanon some 95 million years later.
