CARTAS
1868

9 de noviembre, en Leipzig, a Erwin Rhode:

LETTERS
1868

November 9, in Leipzig, Erwin Rhode:
[...] I am introduced to Richard and I say a few words of veneration, he is interested to know exactly how many I have known of his music, he says terrible things against all performances of his works, excluding those famous of Munich, he mocks of the directors who say with softness to the orchestra: "Gentlemen, it is now apasionato," "dear, now a little bit more passionately." Wagner has fun in imitating the dialect of Leipzig.

Now I will tell you briefly what brought us this evening: joys of a genre so specific exciting that still have not reached to recover ... Before and after the meal, Wagner ran all the important parts of the Meistersinger, imitating all the voices and doing everything with great ease. It is a man extraordinarily lively and spirited, who speaks very quickly, very clever, and in so intimate company, he becomes extremely happy. I had after, a long conversation with him about Schopenhauer: you will understand what a pleasure it was for me to hear him speak of him with a warmth quite indescribable: he owed him, because was the only philosopher who understood the essence of music, got interested after about professors attitudes in relation to him, and laughed heartily of the congress of philosophy of Prague, and spoke of the "philosophical servants ." Then he read a very funny episode of his life as a student in Leipzig, which even today I can not think without laughing, among other things, writes with extraordinary ease and wit. Finally, when we were leaving, he shook my hand warmly and invited me to visit him in a very friendly way, to make music and philosophy ....
