Dust Plumes over Argentina

Dust Plumes over Argentina
Dust blew northward from Argentina’s Laguna Mar Chiquita in early July 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on July 7, 2010. Multiple off-white plumes blow from the lake shores toward the north-northwest. Large plumes blow from the lake’s northern perimeter, especially at the eastern end. A small plume, however, blows from sediments on the lake’s southern shore. East of the lake, small plumes of dust or possibly smoke also blow toward the north-northwest.
Laguna Mar Chiquita is a saline lake in north-central Argentina, about 135 kilometers (85 miles) northeast of Cordoba. Covering nearly 2,000 square kilometers (775 square miles), the lake often gives rise to dust plumes, especially when the lake’s water level recedes.

Fires in Saskatchewan

Fires in Saskatchewan
A large fire in northern Saskatchewan was billowing out a cloud of thick, brownish-gray smoke on July 13, 2010, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this photo-like image. The eastern edge of Lake Athabasca is shrouded by smoke at image upper left. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red, and the burned landscape is dark brown. Despite its size, the fire was not identified as a “high-priority” incident in the July 13 fire situation report from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), probably because it is in such a remote, sparsely populated location. Although the fire itself may not be posing an immediate threat to human health or property, the thick smoke being generated has the potential to affect air quality downwind in Canadian and U.S. cities. (The large image shows an expansive smoke cloud stretching across the Northwest Territories.) According to CIFFC, the number of fires to date this summer in Saskatchewan is less than the number at the same time last year (351 this year compared to 453 last year), but they have burned a larger area (861,395 hectares this year compared to 37,343 hectares last year.) The burned area to date is more than double the 5-year average for this time of year, and more than three and a half times the 25-year average. The large image provided above is at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution (level of detail). The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides the image in additional resolutions.

Tropical Storm Conson

Tropical Storm Conson
Conson briefly strengthened to typhoon status before returning to tropical-storm strength on July 13, 2010. At 15:00 UTC (11:00 p.m. Manila time) on July 13, the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Conson had maximum sustained winds of 60 knots (110 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 75 knots (140 kilometers per hour). The storm was located roughly 70 nautical miles (130 kilometers) east of Manila, and was traveling westward. Passing over land had decreased the storm’s strength. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image at 12:55 p.m. Manila time (4:55 UTC) on July 13, 2010. Storm clouds extend across the Philippines with the apparent center of the storm east-southeast of Manila.
