James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Lowell, Massachusetts, EE. UU., 14 de julio de 1834 – Londres, 17 de julio de 1903) fue un pintor estadounidense, que vivió sobre todo en Francia e Inglaterra.
Invitaron a su padre, George Washington Whistler, a Rusia en 1842 para construir el ferrocarril y aprendió francés en el colegio allí. Estuvo en la United States Military Academy en West Point varios años y la dejó por suspender un examen de química.
Muchas de sus obras fueron controvertidas y fue una figura clave en el movimiento estético. Ilustró Les Chauves-Souris con Antonio de La Gandara, uno de sus muchos amigos, entre los que destacaban impresionistas como Édouard Manet u Oscar Wilde, de quien se rio cuando descubrió su homosexualidad y con quien se cree que mantuvo un romance, al igual que con Walter Richard Sickert, a quien acusaron de ser Jack el Destripador.
Whistler compartió su amante, Joanna Hiffernan, con Gustave Courbet, como modelo. Los historiadores especulan que su L'Origine du monde fue motivo para romper su amistad con Courbet.
Está enterrado en St Nicholas's Church en Chiswick, Londres.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (July 11, 1834 – July 17, 1903) was an American-born, British-based artist. Averse to sentimentality and moral allusion in painting, he was a leading proponent of the credo "art for art's sake". His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail.[1] The symbol was apt, for it combined both aspects of his personality—his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, while his public persona was combative. Finding a parallel between painting and music, Whistler titled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony.[2] His most famous painting is the iconic Whistler's Mother, the revered and oft parodied portrait of motherhood. A wit, dandy, and shameless self-promoter, Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers.[3]
