Although neither of them had ever travelled further than Brighton Mr and Mrs Hopkins decided to celebrate their wedding by cycling to India.

Bored with her life in the provincial southern town of T., Tamara Ivanovna used to read foreign novels and dream of an exotic and cosmpolitan city where the men wore top hats and the mist shrouded the streets for days on end.

Father Thames,an Embankment Sphinx, the Angel of the Poor and a London Policeman. The guardians of the River.

Foxglove was the prettiest of the three sisters who lived at the bottom of the garden, and naturally it was her who was invitted to the catterpillar King's midsummer Ball. Coriander and Parsley pretended of course that they had better things to do- but still an icy silence reigned in their woodland home.

Lyudmilla Konstantinovna was so captivated by the dashing young museum assistant's winning smile and eloquent if wordy compliments that she thought nothing of getting married and spending her honeymoon in the bone vaults of the St Petersburg Imperial Museum of Comparative Osteology.

Serenaded by cherubs and beautiful aerial beings Vladimir and Lydia had the skies to themselves in those heady days when aviation was young... As the skies became more crowded the spirits moved on elsewhere. When was the last time you saw a cherub or aeriel spririt sitting on top of a cloud as you looked out of the window of an aeroplane
Lydia Zvereva, the first female Russian pilot, sadly died in 1916,and a crater on Venus is named after her.

The last night of the year- Isobel knew- was a special night when the toys in the nursery, if left alone and unobserved, came alive and acted out the events that would take place in their mistress's life during the coming year. And every year Isobel tried to stay awake and spy on them -and every year, round about two or three in the morning , she would fall asleep despite herself. And so she never knew what would happen to her until it happened.
